Rome! *The Doctor flipped a few switches and adjusted a large dial, feeling the familiar sensation of the gravity shifting beneath his feet. John and Sexy had come back into the room, Sexy wearing a dress that made her look very- well, definitely very Roman. John had changed too, but his new robe looked a bit strange on top of the jeans and shirt. ‘You’re to talk, Spaceman!’ called a small voice in the back of his head which had a tendency to pipe up on occasions like these. The Doctor squeezed his eyes shut tight until the voice went away. He pulled another lever and felt the TARDIS vworp down and settle beneath him.* Rome! *The Doctor ran past the console and pushed open the wooden doors, feeling a rush of warm air go past his head, blowing his hair onto his face. He gazed, not at the new world past the wooden doors, but back into the TARDIS, at his companions. He made a sweeping gesture with his arms, and he was a magician presenting his prestige; a sculptor pulling the sheet off of his latest marble figure. The Doctor allowed himself a wide smile at the looks of amazement and childish wonder on John and Sexy’s faces. He couldn’t help himself. It was his favorite part.*

*Meanwhile, downstairs, the Doctor pulled levers and switched dials, idly humming to himself. Of course, ‘downstairs’ was far too broad a term to describe where the console was in relation to the library. But the connection between then was so complex that in the year 5576 a very small group of extremely bored astrophysicists had simply given up trying to work said connection out and had simply named the anomaly in which the two ‘places’ could feasibly be connected by another ‘place’ the Egrebert- Sherhauser Stair Effect, and it came to be fondly known as ‘Downstairs’ by the small group of specialized scientists who could understand it. However, being completely unknown to anyone who’d ever been in the TARDIS, it was of no consequence.*
